SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Kick start savings with local credit union help

MANY people feel the financial pinch of the Christmas period in January - but few fail to put a savings plan in place to cover next year’s costs or other large expenses along the way.

One local man has been given a helping hand to kick start his savings for 2016 after he responded to a survey run by a local affordable housing provider and credit union.

Jeff Page, a Yarlington Housing Group resident was the lucky recipient of a £50 cash prize to be deposited into a savings account with Wyvern Savings and Loans.

The volunteer run credit union is a co-operative owned by its members and offers a safe and ethical alternative to high street banks and loan companies. The organisation formed as a result of the merger between Camelot Credit Union and First Dorset Credit Union in October 2015.SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Kick start savings with local credit union help

Wyvern director, Richard Thorley, said: “Over the past few years we’ve seen an increase in people searching for a trustworthy, local solution to their financial difficulties. We now have 17 branch locations across South Somerset and Dorset with over 3,200 members who are benefiting from our savings accounts and low cost loans - we hope to reach many more.”

Yarlington’s financial responsibility manager, Judith Walker, said: “We are pleased to be working with Wyvern Savings and Loans to help promote savings and affordable loans.

“In these difficult times its good to know that there is a service available which is 100% reliable, run by local volunteers for local people.

“We hope our recent survey has helped to raise awareness of the credit union, and the service they provide.”

Winner Jeff Page added: “I was very happy to hear I had won the prize. It wouldn’t have occurred to me to deposit any money into a credit union savings account.

“However, since winning the prize and learning how the organisation can help me save, I am keen continue saving to help cover my big expenses this year and beyond!”
