YEOVIL NEWS: Bag packing marathon is a big success for School in a Bag

THE School in a Bag team has announced that its marathon bag packing fundraising event at the Tesco store in Yeovil raised nearly £4,000 in donations.

The group, which is based at Chilthorne Domer, was joined by an army of 115 volunteers over the day which saw them help Christmas shoppers pack their shopping from 6am through to midnight on December 23, 2015.YEOVIL NEWS: Bag packing marathon is a big success for School in a Bag

They have now announced that a whopping £3,924.28 was raised during the day with donations from shoppers.

A School in a Bag spokesman said: “Thank you once again to the 115 volunteers that took part, as well as all the staff at Tesco who made us feel so welcome.

“We would also like to thank all the shoppers who donated to the cause – it is very much appreciated.”

The money raised will help to cover the cost of 261 School in a Bag rucksacks for children in poverty-stricken countries around the world. The bags are filled with equipment for school life such as exercise books, pens and colouring pencils, plus a lunchbox, eating utensils and a drinks bottle.

School in a Bag was created out of the Piers Simon Appeal which was launched in 2005 following the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004 in which former Preston School and Yeovil College student Piers was killed.

PS: The money raised at the bag-packing event could have also paid for nearly 7,850 Tesco 5p carrier bags!
