SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Community spirit shines through at Ilminster's Senior Citizens Lunch

THE strong community spirit which is so pivotal to the ethos of Ilminster shone through once again on Saturday (January 2, 2016) with the annual Senior Citizens Lunch.

More than 100 of the town’s elder statesmen and women sat down for the traditional New Year festive lunch and entertainment at the Shrubbery Hotel in Ilminster.SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Community spirit shines through at Ilminster's Senior Citizens Lunch Photo 1

Members of the Ilminster Rotary Club, Ilminster Lions Club and the Nyanza Lodge of Freemasons and other helpers were on hand to support the event with a multitude of tasks including serving the diners, providing transport and general duties.

The lunch is funded each year by donations from those charitable organisations plus Marshall Herbert.

Organisers Angela Clapp and Ann Clymow would like to thank the Co-op, E&S Computers, Spar Shop and Garage, Ilminster Hardware and the Royal Oak for having collection boxes in their premises which also help to raise funds.

They would also like to thank the Shrubbery Hotel, Broomhead & Saul, Stuart and Vaughan Lee House, Malcolm Heppell and Nancy Atkins for their support.

Entertainment was provided by the superb local Serenade choir led by David Sutcliffe, while a raffle with prizes donated by Tesco and others raised £200 which will go towards funding the 2017 Senior Citizens Lunch.

Angela and Ann would like to thank Serenade, Tesco and everyone else who once again made the lunch such a special event in Ilminster’s community calendar.
