YEOVIL NEWS: 41 years, 3 months and 28 days – farewell Acorn Music!

A PIECE of Yeovil’s shopping history came to an end yesterday (Saturday, April 4, 2015) in a fitting finale.

Acorn Music, which had been going for more than four decades, closed for the final time yesterday – but it certainly went out with a bang.

A succession of bands and musicians played outside the music shop in Glovers Walk throughout the day while Acorn Music’s Chris Lowe was continually thanked by people – some he knew and possibly many he didn’t – for creating a very special place.

Chris said he had been delighted and “very privileged” that so many musicians had agreed to perform outside the shop.YEOVIL NEWS: 41 years, 3 months and 28 days – farewell Acorn Music!

“It was Acorn’s last day of trading and it was an honour and a great pleasure that these gifted performers came along to play us out,” said Chris.

“It all seems to have gone by in a flash. Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us over a long period.”

Chris had special words for the man who he originally set up Acorn Records, as it was back then, with in 1973 – Rob Bacon.

“I doubt that either of us would have opened a record shop without the support, input and enthusiasm of the other,” he said. “Rob was a top man who knew a lot about a lot of stuff and if I hadn’t known him my life would almost certainly followed a different path.YEOVIL NEWS: 41 years, 3 months and 28 days – farewell Acorn Music!

“We ran the record shop together from its inception in 1973 until he became ill and then passed away in 1996.

“Our younger customers and friends wouldn’t have known Rob, but I know that there are so many others who did know him and who remember him with the same affection and with the same respect as I do.

“Rob has always remained a part of the fabric of Acorn Records and I know he will be there at the end of the road on Saturday in the hearts and of his children and in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew him.

“I am very proud to be able to say that Rob Bacon was my friend.”

A large group of people assembled outside Acorn Music yesterday to listen to the live music, while the shop was thronged with last-minute bargain hunters.

Chris was asked if he would find it strange come Monday morning and realising there was no more Acorn Music.

But he said: “I’ll still be here on Monday – I’ve got to do a stock take!”

Nevertheless, it is the end of an era. We would like to wish Chris a happy retirement.
