YEOVIL NEWS: Aerosol spray caused mini fireball in van explosion

A VAN explosion in Yeovil yesterday (Sunday, March 8, 2015) was triggered by the owner using an aerosol spray to clean the dashboard, fire investigators have said today.

He then turned the engine on and caused a reaction and explosion due to the cleaning product vapours.

The man was momentarily engulfed in flames resulting in mild burns to his face and neck.

The Yeovil fire crew initially treated the casualty on scene in Allingham Road until the arrival of the paramedics who then conveyed him to hospital.  He was treated and went home that afternoon.

The crew made the vehicle safe and confirmed that the cause was accidental.

The van was severely damaged following the explosion that had resulted in the windscreen being blown off along with the doors buckling outward and further damage.

Fire investigation officer Mike Burroughs said: “This is a very unusual incident, I am aware of only one other similar case from overseas.

“The propellant used in almost all aerosols is highly flammable. In this case it seems that the vapours had collected in a confined space behind the dashboard and were ignited by an electrical spark.  This caused a small fireball of very short duration.

“The doors and windows were shut so there was a rapid build-up of pressure which has caused the damage you can see. Please check the safety instructions when using aerosols and make sure your vehicle is well ventilated.”
