SOMERSET NEWS: Demolition of Northgate buildings in Bridgwater

THE next step towards opening up Bridgwater’s Northgate site for future development will be taken next month with the demolition of buildings on site.

Unused buildings on the Somerset County Council-owned part of the site are to be knocked down, with work due to start on April 13, 2015, and be completed by September.

This follows the recent decision by Tesco Stores Ltd not to proceed with its purchase of the site to the north of the town centre which is jointly-owned by the county council and Sedgemoor District Council.

The Blake and Northgate offices and the Bridgwater Enterprise Centre for adults will be demolished. Sedgemoor District Council, the authority responsible for planning, has given the go-ahead for the demolition.

The county council’s resources spokesman, Cllr David Huxtable, said: “We know this is a pivotal site in Bridgwater and will be working closely with our colleagues at Sedgemoor District Council to plan the next steps to make best use of it.

“This demolition helps prepare the site for future development and business opportunities that the town deserves.”
