SOMERSET NEWS: Petrol station drama with fuel tanker

THERE was drama at a Tesco petrol station in Somerset today (Wednesday, February 11, 2015) when the rear axle of a fuel tanker started to smoulder.

The alarm was raised to the problem at just before 12.30pm at the petrol station at Shepton Mallet.

Firefighters from Shepton Mallet, Wells and Castle Cary were all mobilised to the incident and they discovered that the petrol tanker had a full load.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman told the Yeovil Press: “Its rear axle was smouldering and crews worked with a thermal image camera to monitor the temperature.”

Extra equipment was brought in just in case the incident got more serious, but firefighters were able to cool down the back axle of the tanker and avoid potential disaster.

“The cause of the fire was accidental,” added the Fire Service spokesman.
