YEOVIL NEWS: Freedom parade to mark 70 years of Second World War finish

ONE of the local highlights for 2015 will be a freedom parade through the centre of Yeovil to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

While 2014 has seen centenary commemorations take place for the start of the First World War of 1914-18, next year will mark 70 years since the end of the Second World War which ran from 1939-45.

The anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe) will be on May 8, 2015, and VJ Day (Victory in Japan) on August 15, 2015.

Yeovil Town Council and RNAS Yeovilton have been in talks on ways to mark these historic milestones.

There are now plans for personnel from Yeovilton to march through the town, led by the Band of the Royal Marines, on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, a suitable date between the anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day.

Similar parades have been successfully held in Yeovil in 2007 and 2010.
