YEOVIL NEWS: Footballers put their bats out for Phillip Hughes

YEOVIL Town Football Club has put cricket bats and caps outside its Huish Park stadium this morning (Friday, November 28, 2014) – as part of a global tribute to the late Test cricketer Phillip Hughes.

The 25-year-old Australian died yesterday after being hit by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday (November 25, 2014).YEOVIL NEWS: Footballers put their bats out for Phillip Hughes

Thousands of people have now got their cricket bats out and taken photos of them and posted them on social networking Twitter as a way of paying tribute to Hughes.

The phenomenon began yesterday when Paul Taylor, of Sydney, tweeted a photo of a cricket bat and a cap leaning on the wall outside his house using the hashtag #putoutyourbats.

The message soon spread and now cricket bats are appearing all over the world – including here in South Somerset outside Huish Park, home of Yeovil Town FC – to show that sport is united in grief over the tragic death of Phillip Hughes.

The club tweeted these photos (pictured above and right) this morning showing the three cricket bats and caps with the message: “Everyone’s thoughts and prayers at #YTFC are with the Hughes family. #putoutyourbats #63notout.”

The 63 not out refers to the score Hughes was on when he received the devastating injury while playing for South Australia against his former New South Wales team.
