SOMERSET NEWS: Suspected carbon monoxide poisoning

ONE person was taken to hospital this evening (Wednesday, November 12, 2014) suffering from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received a call at just before 6.30pm from the Ambulance Service reporting a carbon monoxide detector activating in commercial premises at the Roughmoor Industrial Estate at Williton.

Two fire engines from Williton and one from Minehead with a gas detector were mobilised to the scene.

A Fire Service spokesman told the Yeovil Press: “Crews confirmed one casualty removed from the building by ambulance personnel suffering from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

“Fire crews inspected the premises and then gained access to an adjoining commercial property.

“A higher than normal carbon monoxide reading was established inside the adjoining property. We ventilated the building and checked that that carbon monoxide levels had been significantly reduced.”

Fire crews inspected a commercial oven and gave safety advice about the dangers of high levels of carbon monoxide – often referred to as the “silent killer.”

The spokesman added: “The casualty was conveyed to hospital by ambulance.”
