REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: Ilminster remembers the fallen

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: Ilminster remembers the fallen

A POIGNANT civic service of remembrance was held this afternoon (Sunday, November 9, 2014) at the Minster Church of St Mary in Ilminster.

The annual Remembrance Sunday event was jointly hosted by Ilminster Town Council and the Ilminster branch of the Royal British Legion.REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: Ilminster remembers the fallen

The vicar of Ilminster, Revd Nigel Done, welcomed everyone to the Minster for the service and the church was packed once again with civic dignitaries, representatives of the Armed Forces, service charities, emergency services and youth organisations and others who wanted to show their respects.

Lessons were read during the service by the Mayor of Ilminster, Cllr Emma Jane Taylor, and Royal British Legion member Andrew Fox.

The address was given by Revd Ken Fowler, the chaplain to the Ilminster branch of the Royal British Legion, and prayers were led by Revd Anna Flindall, Methodist Minister.

A wreath-laying ceremony was then held outside the Minster at the war memorial where a large number of wreaths were placed on behalf of various organisations.

Among the civic dignitaries at the service were Yeovil MP David Laws and Lord Cameron of Dillington.

Once again children and young people played a leading role in proceedings and among the wreaths were those from Wadham School, Swanmead School and Greenfylde First School.

A parade – led by the Stoke-sub-Hamdon Band – then went through the town before refreshments were held at Greenfylde.

Similar services were held throughout South Somerset as the whole country was united in remembrance.
