SOMERSET NEWS: Motorists warned of large load delays

MOTORISTS are being warned about potential traffic delays through Somerset today (Friday, October 24, 2014) due to a large slow moving convoy.

Police have said that a large abnormal load will be travelling through the county which could lead to delays.

The slow moving convoy is scheduled to start its journey from Sedgemoor Services on the M5 at about 10am. It will travel south to the A358 and then on to A303.

It will continue to the A36 in the Wiltshire police force area, along the A361 to Frome and then on to Whatley Quarry in Nunney.

The load will have a police escort.

Anyone using the planned route is being advised to expect delays or find an alternative route.

A police spokesman said: “The large dumper truck, which weighs between 100-150 tonnes and is about 5.5 metres wide will necessitate closing the two lanes of the A303.

“However, it is expected that a road speed of between 30-40mph will be maintained but we would urge motorists to co-operate and comply with the instructions of officers travelling with the load.”

UPDATE: Police later advised this morning (Friday, October 24, 2014) that the large load operation planned for today had been cancelled.
