YEOVIL NEWS: Councillor wants to meet with people over pub closure

A YEOVIL councillor will be holding a mobile surgery outside the recently-closed Fleur De Lys pub on Saturday (October 11, 2014) to talk to anyone concerned about its closure.

Cllr Jon Gleeson will be collecting signatures being added to his letter to the Southern Co-Operative who have taken on the building on a lease from Punch Taverns and plan to turn it into a convenience store.YEOVIL NEWS: Councillor wants to meet with people over pub closure

“I have been in contact with planning officers at South Somerset District Council and the planning officer for CAMRA, the campaign for real ale who are campaigning to save British pubs,” he said.

“There are options but unfortunately the law as is stands means that a supermarket does not require major planning permission to change the use of a pub into a food store which is a disgrace.

“However I will fight to do what I can, which includes getting the building to have a community use element in. I welcome anyone to come and talk to me about the issue.”

Cllr Gleeson (pictured above) will be by the access to the pub from the St Michael’s Avenue side between 11.30am and 12noon on Saturday (October 11, 2014).
