SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Gavin Young is King of the Conkers!

TRIUMPHANT Gavin Young punched the air with delight this afternoon (Sunday, October 5, 2014) at winning the annual Conker Tournament at the Brewers Arms pub in South Petherton.

Gavin showed no mercy in the final as he dispatched his opponent, Christine Jones, 2-0 in the contest which was played over the best of three games.

Both players had marched imperiously to the final defeating all who came before them in the early rounds of the tournament which was expertly judged by Brewers Arms landlord Duncan Webb.

Defending champion Rob Gass, who was looking to make it a hat-trick of tournament successes, fell during an early round.

There was growing tension with each match and there was virtual silence as the final unfolded in a battle of wits, skills and tactics.

But it was Gavin who took the title and he was presented with his Garland of Conkers from the Brewers landlord as the onlooking crowd whooped with delight and applauded the new champion with enthusiasm.

Gavin’s pride was unreserved and he wiped a few tears of emotion from his eyes as he departed the arena.
