SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Antiques Roadshow near Ilminster

EXPERTS will be hoping to discover some hidden treasures next week when the ever-popular BBC show Antiques Roadshow heads for South Somerset.

The show will be taking place at the National Trust’s Barrington Court property at Barrington, near Ilminster, on Thursday, September 18, 2014, from 9.30am to 4.30pm.SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Antiques Roadshow near Ilminster

A team of antiques experts will be on hand to cast their eyes over prized possessions taken along by people for a valuation.

The long-running show has found some fascinating and interesting artefacts, as well as ones worth a small fortune, such as a chandelier found in Adolf Hitler’s bunker, a tie-pin with a possible connection to Lord Nelson, and a Staffordshire creamware pot that had sat on top of a wardrobe for 25 years, yet was worth £14,300.

So the message is simple – take a look in your attic, look in the garage or think about that ornament tucked away in a drawer you inherited from your granny. It could be worth something!

Presenter Fiona Bruce, now in her seventh year with the Roadshow, said: “Every episode is different; a new location and thousands of new visitors.

“The only constant is the pleasure of the unexpected - we never know what will turn up, from a dazzling Russian Fabergé egg to an ancient Maori feather holder!”

Many of Britain's leading antiques and fine arts specialists will be on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors.

Thinking fast - there is no rehearsal on this show - they can never second guess what might appear at their tables next - be it memorabilia from the last survivor of the Titanic, to a junk shop pot, such as the one brought in by artist Harry Bloom at a show last summer. Purchased for 50p, it was found to have a value of over £5,000.

Admission to the Antiques Roadshow at Barrington Court on September 18 is free.
