SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Crews leave Barwick barn fire - 30 hours after it was first reported

FIREFIGHTERS last night (Tuesday, August 12, 2014) left the scene of a barn fire just outside of Yeovil – more than 30 hours after the blaze first took hold.

The fire at a farm in Fairhouse Road, Barwick, was first reported at just before 2.30pm on Monday (August 11, 2014).

Five fire engines were mobilised to get the incident under control and these were replaced by relief crews over the night.

By midday yesterday there was still one crew in attendance at the scene keeping a watch and damping down hotspots to protect nearby buildings in case the fire started up again and spread.

But by 9pm last night it was announced that the Fire Service would be leaving the scene.

A spokesman for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service told the Yeovil Press: “Crews have dampened down the barn and adjoining barn using water from a dam which was set up.

“The barn and contents were totally destroyed by fire. The barn contained 300 tonnes of straw, a trailer and a tractor.”
