YEOVIL NEWS: Westland Sports CC hosts county match for visually impaired

WESTLAND Sports Cricket Club in Yeovil hosted a county match on Saturday (June 21, 2014) when Somerset’s visually-impaired team played host to their counterparts from Sussex.

It turned out to be a fascinating game with the Sussex side – which also included a few players from Hampshire - opening the batting and making 243-6. Somerset held out for 145-7 to leave the game as a draw.YEOVIL NEWS: Westland Sports CC hosts county match for visually impaired

Westland club chairman Rob Fox said it was wonderful to welcome the two teams to Yeovil.

“It was a great game and enjoyed by all the players,” he added.

The ball used was the size of a small football which made a rattling noise when thrown or hit to assist the visually-impaired players.

It was an interesting game to watch and was played in great sporting fashion and proved – once again – that disability does not stop people from taking part.

The Westland club, meanwhile, is now looking ahead to next month when it will be hosting Somerset county youth games on July 6, July 13 and July 20 at 2pm with Under-11s and Under-13s in action.

Westland have a promising bunch of youngsters and these include Max Dicker and Will Chesterman at Under-11 level and Dan Ewens, Will Hanrahan and Will Tattum for the Under-13s.

The fact that the Westland club has just held a county match for the visually-impaired and now preparing to host county youth fixtures shows that it can provide a playing surface suitable for such occasions.
