SOMERSET NEWS: Speed cameras will be back in operation - soon!

SPEED cameras in Somerset are all set to be turned on within the “next couple of months” – according to Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens.SOMERSET NEWS: Speed cameras will be back in operation - soon!

As to when the fixed roadside speed cameras were going to be switched back on was one of the questions posed to Ms Mountstevens last night (Tuesday, May 27, 2014) at a public forum meeting held at the Guildhall in Chard.

Ms Mountstevens preferred to suggest to the audience that people should treat the fixed speed cameras as already being switched on!

But she added that they would be turned back on “within the next couple of months.”

It was back in February that Somerset County Council announced its decision to transfer ownership of the safety cameras to Avon and Somerset Constabulary for £1 each.

The fixed speed cameras were switched-off several years ago as part of a cost-cutting exercise implemented by the county council.

The deal which will see the police take over the responsibility for the cameras on the highway network around Somerset includes the proviso that the council will not incur any costs.
