YEOVIL NEWS: Housing development plans for old Red Cross site

PLANS have been submitted to turn the former British Red Cross Society headquarters in Yeovil into homes.

A planning application has just gone in to South Somerset District Council to make alterations and convert the existing buildings on the corner of Grove Avenue with Preston Road into six flats, as well as build a further three homes within the site.

The current premises are empty having been sold by the British Red Cross after it consolidated the number of sites it owned – with the buildings having previously been used for a variety of purposes including offices and first aid training.YEOVIL NEWS: Housing development plans for old Red Cross site

A possible new access off of Preston Road to serve the development has been ruled out by the developers.

Duncan Pyle, of O2i Design Ltd, representing applicant Mr D. Paull, said: “Having explored the possibility of a new access off Preston Road and having consulted County Highways it was felt that a safer solution that gives more manoeuvring space within the site is to maintain the single access point off Grove Avenue.”

Mr Pyle added: “This development would provide much-needed residential accommodation in this area of Yeovil and the scheme respects the importance of the conservation area and the corner site.”

The application will first be discussed by Yeovil Town Council’s planning committee before a final decision is made by the district authority.
