YEOVIL NEWS: Yarn Bombing is coming to town!

GREEN-FINGERED enthusiasts in Yeovil are being urged to turn their attention to knitting needles and invited to help brighten up Sidney Gardens with a form of street art called Yarn Bombing.

Yarn Bombing employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk, which can be easily removed at the end of the display with no damage.YEOVIL NEWS: Yarn Bombing is coming to town!

On Wednesday, April 16, 2014, from 10.30am, residents can help staff from Yeovil in Bloom yarn bomb SidneyGardens with a colourful array of patterns and designs.

Get involved by visiting charity shops in town and buying any knitted or crochet blankets you see. You can also knit squares or five inch by two foot lengths that we will sew together to use during the yarn bomb.

Lesley Jelleyman, Yeovil in Bloom Officer at South Somerset District Council, said: “We’re really hoping that residents turn out to support this scheme and we can all turn Sidney Gardens into a more colourful and vibrant area of the town for the summer.”

Chairman of the Yeovil in Bloom Steering Group, Cllr David Recardo, added: “Yarn bombing is something that appears to be quite a hit in the United States.

“It was used in London last year with great affect, we want to bring it to Yeovil and help brighten the town up with a different form of organised street art yet to be seen here.

“The Steering Group were keen to explore the idea and felt that SidneyGardens is a large enough area for residents to see the full effects of the yarn bombing. We’re really hoping this adds a dynamic view to our 2014 Britain in Bloom South West Competition campaign for the community involvement section.”

The Yeovil in Bloom initiative is managed and funded by Yeovil Town Council, and delivered with the support of South Somerset District Council.

Sidney Gardens is located by The Park School just off the town centre on the other side of the bridge from the Armoury Inn.
