New opening hours for Yeovil Recycling Centre start TODAY!

NEW opening hours come into force today (Tuesday, April 1, 2014) which will see the Yeovil Household Waste Recycling Centre open seven days a week.

The recycling centre in Artillery Road on the Lufton Trading Estate had in recent times been closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and shuts its gates at 1pm on Sundays.

But now from today the centre will be open throughout the week from 8am to 4pm – including Sundays.

Now officials at Somerset Waste Partnership are hoping that the increased opening hours will result in an increase in recycling among local people.New opening hours for Yeovil Recycling Centre start TODAY!

The Yeovil Press has obtained some statistics about the Yeovil site based on figures from the 2012-13 financial year.

Users of the Yeovil site helped to see 3,134.72-tonnes of garden waste composted; 1,599.58 tonnes of “dry” materials such as metal, paper, wood and electricals recycled; while 1,722.22-tonnes of soil and rubble were sent for landfill.

There were 122,448 visits to the Yeovil recycling centre in 2012-13, while the current recycling rate at the site is 77 per cent.

Site manager Pete Somers is hopeful that recycling rates at Yeovil will increase now that the opening hours have been extended.

Somerset Waste officials believe that the longer opening hours at Yeovil will benefit thousands of residents, improve recycling levels and contribute to local authority efforts to continue driving down the already falling rate of fly-tipping.

The centre will be open throughout the year apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
