South Somerset freezes its share of the Council Tax bill for fourth year running

SOUTH Somerset District Council has agreed to freeze its share of the Council Tax bill for the fourth year running.

Council members last night (Thursday, February 27, 2014) set a budget of £17,540,800 for the 2014-15 year.

They unanimously agreed that there would be no increase in Council Tax for the new financial year and it would result in an average Band D property being charged £150.74.South Somerset freezes its share of the Council Tax bill for fourth year running

The budget will see the council make savings of £1.2m in 2014-15 with the vast majority coming from “house-keeping” exercises rather than actual cuts to services.

Councillors also agreed to provide Council Tax discount support to those people who have affected by the floods on the Somerset Levels in places such as Thorney, Muchelney, Muchelney Ham and Oath.

The overall Council Tax bill is made up of amounts for the county council, district council, town/parish council, Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and the Avon & Somerset Police.

The county council receives the lion’s share – around 70 per cent – of the Council Tax bill.

There will be more news on this later.
