What a night as the South West takes a battering!

FALLING trees, blocked roads, roof tiles flying off, localised flooding – Yeovil and South Somerset took one hell of a pounding overnight (February 14-15, 2014) in a fierce storm which ravaged the South West.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received hundreds of calls from throughout the region with people reporting weather-related problems.

Police are currently (9.20am on February 15, 2014) reporting that the A30 West Coker Road at Yeovil is blocked at the A3088 Watercombe Lane/Rye Gardens due to a fallen tree. What a night as the South West takes a battering!

Last night there were problems on the main Queensway dual-carriageway through Yeovil with a fallen tree, while the road between Yeovil and Montacute was also blocked because of a tree blown down in the gale force winds.

The storm which struck yesterday (February 14, 2014) was ferocious and one incident saw a giant trampoline fly up from somebody’s garden into trees in Preston Road, Yeovil, forcing the emergency services to close the road for a while until the play equipment had been safely returned to ground level.

Householders this morning (Saturday, February 15, 2014) may venture out into their gardens and find things either missing or things that might not have been there before with the strong winds working their menacing magic during the night.

There will also be structural damage to homes and people are being advised to take care when investigating roofs.
