Police urge drivers to keep to main roads

POLICE have been warning motorists in Yeovil and South Somerset today (Saturday, February 15, 2014) to take care following last night’s damage caused by storm force gales.

Due to the high winds there were a number of trees which were toppled and police have worked with agency colleagues and volunteers throughout the day to clear most roads of branches and other debris.

A police spokesman said: “While we believe we have cleared most of the main roads it is still possible that there may be branches and other debris on some smaller roads and we are urging motorists to take care.”Police urge drivers to keep to main roads

Four roads were closed this morning in South Somerset: Camp Road between Yeovil and Odcombe due to a tree blocking the road; Montacute Road from Bluebell Way, Yeovil, due to a tree blocking the road; Shave Lane at Horton, near Ilminster, due to a tree blocking the road; and School Street at Drayton, near Langport, due to power lines being down.

Although it has not been confirmed – it is expected that those roads are now all back open to drivers.

The police spokesman added: “With poor weather, including driving rain and high winds expected over the next 24 hours, drivers are reminded to take care and try to keep to main roads and avoid lanes, especially those which are at risk from flooding.”
