DIGGING, planting and staking was the topic of learning for many children on the Abbey Manor estate in Yeovil - with the help of staff from South Somerset District Council’s horticultural team.

Children from Preston Primary School and students from Lufton College came out of the classroom into the mud at Oak Tree Park to assist council staff to plant a range of young trees.Mud glorious mud and new trees on Abbey Manor

Although very wet and muddy, all children and students who took part in the tree planting project had lots of fun – but nobody went away with clean wellies!

A total of 17 new trees were planted at Oak Tree Park which included Oak, Beech and Lime trees.

Preston Primary School became involved in the tree planting project through a parent contact and through Brympton Parish Council asking if they would like to participate.

Preston teacher Sue Howes said: “I try to encourage children to get out into their community to study nature and help on projects such as this.

“They always benefit immensely from working outside and the tree planting activity will be something for them to remember for always.”

The council’s environment spokesman, Cllr Jo Roundell Greene, added: “Despite the cold and wet weather, a lot of fun in the mud was had by all the children involved.

“We encourage tree planting and like to see young children getting involved so that it helps them with their learning back in the classroom.”
