Where was the Benny Hill music as pitch invader skipped by Keystone Cops?

IT may have seemed a bit of fun at the time, but one Yeovil Town fan now faces being banned from watching football in the future.

Just as the referee blew the final whistle to bring an end to Yeovil’s 4-0 success over Leyton Orient at Huish Park in the Third Round of the FA Cup this afternoon (Saturday, January 4, 2014) one foolhardy supporter made a dash across the pitch and evaded countless attempts by stewards to stop him.

The supporter then leapt over a wall and raced off in a bid to avoid being caught but, alas, he was finally nabbed and arrested by police.

The whole incident brought much hilarity for onlooking fans, but whether the authorities see the funny side of things remains to be seen.

Yeovil Town’s police liaison officer, Ian Hambridge, speaking on social networking site Twitter, tweeted after the game: “One male arrested for running on to the pitch surface.”Where was the Benny Hill music as pitch invader skipped by Keystone Cops?

He said the supporter now faced being charged and given a Football Banning Order for a “stupid act.”

Nevertheless, it caused much amusement for onlooking supporters and players as the fan-on-the-run escaped the clutches of the stewards.

Supporters have said the stewards acted more like the Keystone Cops and that the Huish Park “sound system” should have been blasting out the Benny Hill theme tune music!

Transfer-listed striker Paddy Madden tweeted: “A mention for the pitch invader today. What a run from him, great dropping the shoulder movement, then great leap over the wall.”

Assistant manager Terry Skiverton tweeted: “Must say that was the best slalom run from a pitch invader I have ever seen. Not big or clever though.”

Even Yeovil manager Gary Johnson, speaking after the game, mentioned the pitch invader in his post-match press conference.

He quipped that he did – just for a moment – contemplate making a rugby tackle on the supporter after seeing the efforts of the stewards fail to bring him down.
