Drivers urged to tell council about pothole problems

PEOPLE in Yeovil and surrounding area are being encouraged to continue reporting pothole problems to Somerset County Council.

The highways department at County Hall has been fighting a never-ending battle in its attempts to repair potholes on the road which have been badly damaged over the past few years by heavy winter snow and flooding.Drivers urged to tell council about pothole problems

Tens of thousands of potholes have been repaired in the past year and it is one of the main activities for the highways department. For example, this time last year and 2,911 potholes were reported in January and 1,990 were repaired, while in February 2012 a whopping 3,880 were reported and 3,701 were dealt with.

The council will now be bracing itself for another influx of pothole problems following prolonged bad weather over the Christmas and New Year period.

Locally there have been reports of pothole problems along Thorne Lane in Yeovil where a number of motorists have suffered damage to their vehicles.

The council’s highways spokesman, Cllr Harvey Siggs, has consistently said that the authority welcomes people phoning in with pothole problems and reports of road defects.

Last year he said that if they “do not know about them, they can’t do anything about them.”

Anyone wanting to report a problem can contact the highways department at Somerset County Council on 0845-345-9155.

The council’s website will also give details of how motorists can claim against the authority if they have suffered damage to their vehicle due to an unrepaired pothole or road defect.
