Don't miss out on recycling days over Christmas

FAMILIES are being urged not to let refuse and recycling pile up by missing collections that change by a day or two during a busy festive season – especially for their food waste.

Most residents’ collection days change over Christmas and New Year, while all recycling sites will close as they do every year on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, in addition to their usual timetable.

Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) is highlighting the changes on its main and mobile websites, and in local newspaper adverts.Don't miss out on recycling days over Christmas

Between extra packaging before the big day and all the recycling and refuse after Christmas and New Year, SWP says catching collections in time avoids overloading kerbside boxes or – worst of all – sending food and other recyclable materials to costly polluting landfill via the refuse bin.

Kerbside collections are unchanged on Monday, December 23, and Christmas Eve, but do not take place on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, and will be two days later for the rest of the week, including Thursday’s pick-ups on Saturday, December 28, and Friday’s on Sunday, December 29.

Pick-ups are unchanged on Monday, December 30, and New Year’s Eve on Tuesday, December 31. But they do not take place on New Year's Day, and will be one day later for the rest of that week, including Friday collections on Saturday, January 4. Kerbside recycling and refuse collections resume from Monday, January 7, 2014.

Clinical and assisted waste collections follow the same pattern, while garden waste pick-ups are suspended from Wednesday, December 25, resuming from Wednesday, January 8, on usual days.

As well as speeding up collections by roughly sorting kerbside collection boxes, SWP asks families to recycle all food waste as it will be transformed by Somerset’s new anaerobic digestion (AD) facility into clean, green power that could cook their turkey or light up their Christmas tree.
