Sex offence victims are coming forward

SEXUAL offences in the Yeovil area have risen by more than 13 per cent over the past year.

But Acting Inspector Jamie Rees has said that he is taking a positive view about the 13.3 per cent figure as it means more victims are coming forward.

Police and relevant agencies have repeatedly appealed to victims - both female and male - of sexual offences to come forward and seek help rather than suffer in silence.

And Acting Inspector Rees told members of South Somerset District Council's Area South committee yesterday (Wednesday, December 4, 2013) that the increase may be a reflection of more victims actually reporting offences.

"We have worked really hard to get people to report domestic violence and sexual assaults," he said.
