People gather to pay their respects on Remembrance Sunday
HUNDREDS of people descended on Yeovil town centre this morning (Sunday, November 10, 2013) and gathered around the War Memorial to pay their respects to those that had lost their lives during times of conflict.
A parade of servicemen and women, both past and present, as well as youth organisations marched to the War Memorial before civic dignitaries arrived and took their places led by the Mayor of Yeovil, Cllr Manny Roper, Yeovil MP David Laws and South Somerset District Council chairman Cllr Mike Best.
A short service took place before a lone bugler played the Last Post to signify the start of a two-minute silence as standard bearers lowered their flags at 11am.
The Borough was eerily quiet, apart from the occasional sound of a child’s voice or a muffled cough, as people stood and remembered.
The silence was broken by the bugler with the playing of Reveille and the standards being raised once more.

A wealth of wreaths were placed around the foot of the War Memorial before the civic dignitaries and parade marchers went to the nearby St John’s Church for a Remembrance Service.
Similar Acts of Remembrance will be carried out at towns and villages across South Somerset today.
A shorter service will be held again tomorrow (Monday, November 11, 2013) at the War Memorial in Yeovil for Armistice Day when a two-minute silence will be held at 11am to commemorate the end of the First World War on November 11, 1918.
More photos from today’s Remembrance Sunday parade and service will appear on this website later.
