Off-duty police officers praised for efforts

OFF-DUTY bobbies have been going one step beyond to help combat crime - at a time when the police are increasingly coming under public scrutiny nationally.

Three times in the past eight days off-duty officers have helped in the successful detention of suspect, demonstrating that in Avon and Somerset police officers and police staff remain alert and on standby – even on their days off. Off-duty police officers praised for efforts

In the first incident a 32-year-old man, who has committed a number of incidents and was being sought by police was arrested in Crewkerne, after he was spotted by an eagle-eyed off duty police officer.

The officer noticed that the suspect had a weapon and called colleagues who attended and detained the man.

He has since appeared in court, charged with possession of an offensive weapon and being in possession of a class A drug.

On Friday (October 18) an off-duty officer noticed a man shoplifting in Frome and detained the culprit and his partner and called for support from colleagues, while on Monday in Shepton Mallet another off duty officer recognised a woman who was being sought by police. He advised colleagues who were able to stop and detain the woman, who has been reported for summons for dangerous driving.

Chief Constable Nick Gargan said: "At a time when the service is under close scrutiny, it is worth remembering the everyday heroics – on and off duty – that are the daily business of a police force. I am extremely proud of these officers. They are typical of the men and women who police this area with courage and integrity."
