Volunteers wanted for Yeovil bag packing marathon!

THE School in a Bag project – part of the Piers Simon Appeal charity – is looking for volunteers to help with a fundraising bag-packing marathon later this year at a supermarket in Yeovil.

For the third year running, School in a Bag will be at the main Tesco store in town on the last Saturday before Christmas which will be on Saturday, December 21.

But this year the organisers have taken it to the next level by turning the event into an 18-hour packing marathon!Volunteers wanted for Yeovil bag packing marathon!

Charity liaison officer, Luke Simon, told the Yeovil Press: “Last year, with only a handful of packers between 9am and 5pm, we raised a brilliant £768.

“The busiest time on the tills was between 6am and 7am and the store was getting busier when we left at the end of our stint.

“So we have decided to lengthen our presence there this year and turn it into a marathon.”

School in a Bag is now looking for volunteers to come to the Tesco store to pack in shifts to suit their timetable on the day.

Luke added: “Our aim is to try and get as many of the tills filled throughout the course of the marathon and in particular, I would like to tap in to the schools and clubs around the Yeovil area to get them involved helping us to fund School Bags for poor, orphan, vulnerable and disaster affected children.

“With a big effort, I am sure we can raise over £2,000 - enough to fund 135 School Bags."

If you can spare some time on Saturday, December 21, and want to get involved please contact info@schoolinabag.org or call 01935-849160.

The School Bags are like rucksacks packed with everyday essentials for pupils to go to school in poverty-stricken and disaster-hit nations around the globe.

The initiative was created as part of the Piers Simon Appeal which was formed following the death of former Yeovil College student Piers Simon in the Asian tsunami of 2004.

The Yeovil Press is proud to have the Piers Simon Appeal as one of its official sponsors. Find the School in a Bag/PSA advert on the front page of this website - click on it and it will take you through to the charity's own official website where a lot more information can be found.
