Yeovil Town v Brighton: Football put into perspective once again

FOOTBALL has been put into perspective once more with news that Brighton and Hove Albion players will wear black armbands at Huish Park on Saturday (October 19, 2013) in their Sky Bet Championship match with Yeovil Town in memory of a supporter who has been killed this week while serving in Afghanistan.

Lance Corporal James Brynin, 22, of the Intelligence Corps, was killed on Tuesday (October 15, 2013) while on patrol in Helmand Province.

In the early hours of Tuesday, the Brigade Reconnaissance Force of the 7th Armoured Brigade deployed from CampBastion into the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand.

Lance Corporal Brynin’s section became the target of enemy fire and during this exchange he suffered a fatal gunshot wound.Yeovil Town v Brighton: Football put into perspective once again

Devastated parents Efrem and Sharon, plus sister Yasmin and his girlfriend, Olivia, paid the following family tribute: “Heart of a lion, we will always stand strong for you. We will never forget. Rest in peace.”

Lieutenant Colonel Mark Purves, Royal Signals, Commanding Officer of the 14th Signal Regiment (Electronic Warfare), said: “Lance Corporal Brynin was immensely popular and an outstanding soldier in every respect.

“Full of energy and an avid fan of Brighton and Hove Albion FC, he was also involved in every aspect of regimental life.”

A spokesman at Brighton and Hove Albion said: “Everyone connected with the club extend their thoughts and prayers to James’ family and friends at this very sad time.”

It goes, without saying, that Yeovil Town Football Club and its supporters echo those same sentiments at a time when, once again, sport has to play secondary to actual life.

Lance Corporal Brynin’s death takes to 445 the number of UK service members who have lost their lives since operations in Afghanistan began in October 2001.
