Celebrating Older People's Day in Yeovil

THE Yeovil-based Yarlington Housing Group got involved with a national day of celebrating the achievements and contributions that older people make in our society.

People are living longer and 23% of the UK will be aged 65 and over by 2035. October 1 saw Older People’s Day celebrated in the UK, coinciding with the UN International Day of Older Persons.

Not only was the day aimed at recognising what the older generation can provide, but also to challenge negative attitudes and out-dated stereotypes.

To celebrate the day residents and staff at Yarlington Housing Group’s Retirement Living Schemes opened their doors to the community.Celebrating Older People's Day in Yeovil

Over 220 residents and members of the local community joined in with a whole range of activities taking place across schemes; from Wii competitions, to dressing up, singing, meeting ‘Biggles’ and enjoying hot meals and refreshments - a lot of fun was had.

At Pembroke Retirement Living scheme in Yeovil, resident and published author, Derek Phillips spoke about the books he has written on local railway routes and his work at the Yeovil Town Power Depot which sparked conversations on the history of the town and changes people have seen over the years.

Scheme manager at Pembroke, Barbara Dover, said: "It was very rewarding to see everyone having such a good time, laughing and smiling, especially at the sing-a-long and when reminiscing with neighbours.

"It was also great to see those that don’t normally join in come along. Everyone enjoyed the day and can’t wait for the next one - from this we will be starting a railway club and craft afternoon!"

Residents’ Iris Horsfield and Doris Moore said: "It has been lovely, a good laugh and we have loved the old fashioned songs and singing."

Staff from Yarlington’s Retirement Living team also visited a number of older residents living in general need properties to raise awareness of the support services available to them, identify any residents that may benefit from further contact and invite them to participate in social events at their local scheme.
