Yeovil driver watches out-of-control car slide towards him

A YEOVIL driver has spoken of his horror when an out-of-control car careered towards him only to miss him by yards.

Well-known Yeovil Town FC fan Mark Kelly was returning home from Chard yesterday (Tuesday, October 8, 2013) at around 3pm when he suddenly became a witness to an accident in which another car coming the other way had lost control on a bend, smashed through a telegraph pole, flipped over onto its roof and slid along the road.Yeovil driver watches out-of-control car slide towards him

“I couldn’t look,” said 48-year-old Mark (pictured right). “It all happened so fast, but I had to drive onto a grass verge to avoid being hit by this car sliding towards me. It missed me by just a few yards.

“It was definitely one of those moments when you think about what could have happened.”

A paramedic was also driving in the area at the time and he stopped to help give the driver some assistance who, miraculously, managed to crawl out of the car once it had stopped.

Mark added: “I can’t really say what I was thinking, but just let’s say it involved the brown stuff!”

The incident happened on the main A30 coming out of Chard heading towards Crewkerne.

One fire engine from Chard was mobilised following a call from the police about a car having hit a telegraph pole and was leaking fuel.

A spokesman for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “On arrival the crew confirms this was the case, but that the car had come to rest on its roof.

“All persons were free and clear of the vehicle and in the care of paramedics.”

Lucky Mark Kelly added: “It was something you’d see in a film – it was a pretty spectacular crash in which the car spun in the air.

“But I just can’t help but think that had I been a few seconds earlier the car could have landed right on top of me!”

A police spokesman said that the driver suffered back and other minor injuries in the incident.
