Bee-zy time for rangers at Yeovil Country Park

Bee-zy day for rangers at Yeovil Country Park

COUNTRYSIDE rangers at the Yeovil Country Park  discovered over the weekend a nest of suspected rare British Black Bees.Bee-zy day for rangers at Yeovil Country Park

The discovery came after the top of a dead oak tree fell over at the weekend at Penn Hill.

The Black Bees are the native honeybee, but were thought to be extinct in the UK in the 1950s, so populations of the continental honeybee were introduced to aid crop pollination.

A spokesman for the rangers said: “We assisted local bee keepers to move the swam from the tree into the hive where the colony can be looked after during the winter to help this native population recover.”

There are only a few sites in the UK where these bees have been recorded so the rangers and bee keepers are delighted at finding some at the Yeovil Country Park.

If people come across the hive while at the park they have been asked to stay away for safety. The hive is to be moved within the next couple of days.
