Yarlington Housing Group looks to the future

YARLINGTON Housing Group in Yeovil is looking to the future with statistics showing that the number of people aged over 65 is set to increase by more than 25% in the ten years to 2021.

The housing provider has said that never has it been more important to ensure that the needs of our senior citizens are catered for and their future is safe and secure following the figures published by the Office for National Statistics.

Finding a place where older family members can  be supported to live independently for as long as possible was made one step easier this week as one local provider threw open its doors and invited the public in to see what they have to offer.

Seven of the ten Extra Care schemes in South Somerset run by Yarlington Housing Group welcomed visitors from across the county,  and to get a real taste of living with them, after a tour of the facilities they served up a typical two-course lunch that is available to all residents.Yarlington Housing Group looks to the future

“Living with Yarlington is about independence” said senior officer Jan Skeemer.

“We encourage and support all of our residents to do as much as they are able for themselves, and with each property being fully functioning with its own lounge and kitchen, it’s a real sense of home-from-home.”

One resident was encouraged to live at a Yeovil Extra Care scheme by her mother.

Roma Holt, who lives with her husband, Arthur, in one of the scheme bungalows for 13 years, said: “My mother lived here until 1998, and I moved in two years later. She would have been thrilled as she loved it here and would have been delighted to see me as happy as she had been.”

Visitors for the day Anne Richards and Ursula Burch were very pleased with what they saw. “We can’t wait to get to look into one of the apartments” they said as they enjoyed a lunch in the very attractive garden.

All of Yarlington’s Extra Care schemes offer homes to those who have a care need, and are allocated using the Homefinder Somerset system following an assessment by a social worker and Yarlington’s own dedicated team. They are manned 24 hours a day, and offer peace of mind with pull cords and alarm pendants, as well as the hot meal service and a range of domestic services available to those who need them.

As the Open Day progressed, an enthusiastic group were settling in to an afternoon game of Bingo, which is one of many activities offered, along with coffee mornings, craft and Flexercise sessions, quizzes and day-trips.

For more information contact Yarlington who will be pleased to discuss the options available to your elderly relatives or those within your care.
