Golf day supports the Piers Simon Appeal

THE Piers Simon Appeal and its School in a Bag initiative has gained a “hole in one” after being named as the chosen charity for this year’s annual golf day being organised by the Somerset Chamber.

Golf day supports the Piers Simon AppealThe golf day will take place at Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club on September 26 and a Chamber spokesman said they were delighted to be supporting the School in a Bag scheme.

SIAB, based at Chilthorne Domer, delivers rucksacks full of stationery, learning resources and eating utensils to poor, orphan, vulnerable and disaster-affected children around the world.

SIAB is a simple solution – each School Bag will enable a child to write, draw, colour, calculate, express themselves, eat, drink and, ABOVE ALL, learn.

The cost to produce and ship a School Bag worldwide is just £15. A typical School Bag contains – ten pencils, ten biro pens, 12 colouring pencils, a maths set, a ruler, a pencil case, three exercise books, a water bottle and a lunch box.

The Piers Simon Appeal was formed following the death of 33-year-old former Yeovil College student Piers Simon, who perished in the Asian tsunami of 2004 while holidaying in Thailand.

A spokesman for the PSA said: “We are very happy to have secured the main sponsors for the Somerset Chamber Golf Day.”

Nearly 50 Schools Bags are currently on their way to children in Nigeria. That will be the 14th country the charity has supported while it has distributed a whopping 39,300 School Bags.
