STAFF from Preston Sports Centre are working with Knightstone Housing to set up a professionally-run gym at the Yeovil Foyer.

Sports centre staff are inducting young people into how to use the gym safely and developing regular six-week fitness programmes for them.

The centre, run by leisure provider 1610, will then oversee weekly gym sessions with funding supplied by South Somerset District Council.

The long-term plan is to train members of the Yeovil Foyer project on how to run the gym themselves.

Leisure service manager at Preston Sports Centre, Matt Harras, said: “This is a very exciting project for 1610 – we have been working with Knighstone Housing as part of our outreach programme and we have been looking at ways to increase fitness activity among the young people they work with.

“The aim of the sessions will not be just to get the residents fit, but also to improve their self-esteem and motivation, and hopefully with an active body and active mind they will go on to great things in the future.”

Knighstone Housing’s Penny Schofield added “We are delighted to be able to offer this new opportunity to the young people we work with.

“They will have the chance to improve their health and fitness as well as increase their confidence and employment skills.”
