Air Day - what a scorcher!

WOW what a scorcher! With temperatures soaring as high as the aircraft on display, the International Air Day at RNAS Yeovilton yesterday (Saturday, July 13) was a massive success.

Picture postcard clear blue skies and a slight breeze made flying conditions perfect for the wonderful collection of aircraft which assembled at the base to put on a super show for the 40,000 people.

Umbrellas have often been brought to Air Day in recent years to deal with rain, but yesterday the brollies were used to cover from the sun with the temperature rising to over 30 degrees.

Commodore Jock Alexander, Commanding Officer of RNAS Yeovilton, pictured right, said: “It’s been superb.

“We’ve got wonderful weather and between 35,000 and 40,000 people here to enjoy a super air show.”

 The ever-popular Red Arrows kicked-off the flying display to delight the spectators, while other crowd pleasers were the magnificent Vulcan and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Air Day was completed with the thrills and spills of the Commando Assault.

As well as the flying display, there were plenty of other attractions and static exhibitions.

While Air Day was the overwhelming winner on the day, ice-cream sellers will today be replenishing stocks with huge queues throughout, while cider tents and other drinks outlets were also running dry.
