Keep fit now to prevent falls later

SOMERSET Public Health advisers are encouraging people to take steps to prevent falls later in life by keeping fit and active and their feet in good shape.Keep fit now to prevent falls later

They are using national Falls Awareness Week (June 17-21) to remind people that the best advice is to exercise on a daily basis and highlight the help that is available.

Around 30 per cent of over 65s and 50 per cent of those aged over 80 fall over every year. Keeping fit is one of the most effective ways to maintain independence and to ensure we stay steady on our feet and reduce balance problems.

Carolyn Arscott, health promotion manager for older people at Somerset County Council, said: “Keeping active as we get older is very important, it will help you maintain your balance and overall agility.

‘’People in Somerset are living longer and healthier lives and helping them to live independently for as long as possible is one of the priorities of the Somerset Health and Wellbeing Board.

“We can all take steps to help ourselves and physical activity is one of the most effective ways we can all positively influence our own health and keep ourselves agile.”

Anything that challenges our balance and improves muscle strength, particularly in our legs, can help to reduce falls.

Walking, gardening, Tai Chi and dancing are great examples, or if you need more assistance, you can ask your GP or local council about strength and balance classes in your area. You can also find out about find activities in your local area by visiting the ZING website at www.zingsomerset.co.uk .

If you are worried about your balance there are Balance and Safety classes across Somerset run by physiotherapists at local Community Hospitals.

Why not sign up now to reduce your risk of falling and boost your confidence? You can contact the Falls Service on 01458 836492.
