Tesco plan for PIcketty Witch takes another step forward

SUPERMARKET giants Tesco are taking another step to opening one of its Express convenience stores along Ilchester Road in Yeovil after submitting a number of planning applications to South Somerset District Council.

It is no secret that Tesco are planning on transforming the former Picketty Witch pub into its third Tesco Express store in Yeovil to compliment its superstore in the centre of town.Tesco plan for PIcketty Witch takes another step forward

People living in the Ilchester Road area received a letter from Tesco in December last year - as reported here on Yeovil Press - that the company was planning on converting the old pub into a convenience store; much to the dismay of many.

The council has already said that planning permission is NOT required for a change of use from a pub to a shop.

Back in December a council spokesman said: ‘’Planning permission will be required, however, for external alterations such as the provision of a shop front.’’

Now Tesco has just submitted a planning application to carry out minor exterior alterations to provide a new shopfront.

It has also asked the council for permission to install an ATM cash machine, three air conditioning units and two fan condenser units to the rear of the building.

The firm is also seeking the go-ahead to install five bollards and display a number of signs.

It is expected that the new store will create 20 full and part-time jobs.

Tesco already has its giant superstore in the centre of town at Huish, while it also has Express stores on the Abbey Manor Park estate in the west and at Cavalier Way in the east.

The Picketty Witch was built in the 1930s, but has now been boarded up and closed off with metal fences for many months.
