SSDC continues to make energy savings

SOUTH Somerset District Council is continuing to power down its carbon costs and emissions after implementing several energy efficiency savings in the past 12 months.

Some of the measures SSDC has taken to reduce the Council’s carbon footprintSSDC continues to make energy savings include introducing thin and more environmentally friendly client computing to replace conventional PCs and the installation of PIR (automatic switching) LED lighting in the corridors of Brympton Way, Yeovil.

Large photovoltaic arrays have been fitted on the roofs of the Brympton Way offices and these will save £15,333 per annum while producing 35,742 kWh per year: enough energy to power seven households. Similar projects have also been successful at the council’s Lufton Depot, Yeovil Crematorium and Petters Way offices.

The council is currently investigating the installation of biomass (wood heat) boilers, the replacement of T8 lighting, renovating windows and the installation of voltage optimisation at various council locations in the Yeovil area.

Cllr Henry Hobhouse, the council’s spokesman for property and climate change, said: ‘’The council has taken a big step in the direction of a greener future and made electricity saving of around 11% after installing voltage optimisation at Brympton Way alone.’’

He added: “I am delighted to say that SSDC is £71,667 better off as a result of energy initiatives. Our engineering and property services team have worked fantastically hard to achieve this level of savings in a very short space of time.’’
