Kevin needs YOUR support in London Marathon bid

FORMER Yeovil student Kevin Jones will be putting himself through the pain barrier later this month to raise money for a charity which is very close to his heart.Kevin needs YOUR support in London Marathon bid

Kevin, 26, a former Preston School student, is planning on running the London Marathon on April 21 with the hope of raising a bucket load of cash for the Candlelighters charity which has the aim of fighting children’s cancer.

The Yorkshire-born lad is currently hard in training and has said himself that it will be a massive challenge for him to complete the 26.2-mile course around the capital.

But he is determined to do it and would love YOUR support.

‘’I am raising money for a fantastic charity,’’ he said. ‘’The thought of a child being diagnosed with cancer must be the most horrific thing to happen to any family or loved one. Any money raised to help such a worthy cause Candlelighters I know will be extremely grateful.’’

After a spell working at DIY mail-order company Screwfix in Yeovil, Kevin decided to head for warmer climates and moved to Tenerife in 2006 where he stayed for six years working at the popular Yates’s bar as a DJ.

‘’I am no longer the wild child running around a bar in Tenerife up to all sorts of tomfoolery – I’m in training to run the London Marathon,’’ he said.

Supporting Candlelighters was an obvious choice for Kevin to make – his grandfather, Bill Desmond, has been backing the cancer charity for more than 30 years.

‘’My grandad collects the large whiskey bottles full of change you see in pubs, counts them and then takes them to the bank weekly,’’ said Kevin.

‘’He has been badly affected himself in the last year by this terrible disease, yet this did not stop him in his "duties".

‘’Even when in agony being rushed into hospital his only thought being "the money needs to be in the bank in the morning"! It is for that reason I am challenging myself to do this.’’

Kevin, who is currently working for an events company in Liverpool, added: ‘’Many thanks in advance for anything you can spare.’’
