Charity abseil coins in the cash

YEOVIL District Hospital abseil heroes helped to raise more than £17,000 for the town’s new Special Care Baby Unit.

More than 120 people took part in the daring challenge on Saturday which saw hundreds of supporters turn out to back the Flying Colours Appeal and watch their friends and family abseil 100ft from the roof Yeovil District Hospital.

A total of £17,018.98 has been raised so far, for the Special Care Baby Unit as part of the Flying Colours Appeal for Yeovil Women’s Hospital.

The money was raised through sponsorship for people that took part in the Yeovil Abseil Challenge.

Community fundraiser for the Flying Colours Appeal, Sarah Cherry, said:  ''Everyone did really well getting people to sponsor them.

''One keen supporter, Teresa Samuel, raised over £1,,000 alone in sponsorship and a team from Yarlington Housing Group raised £1,215 between them with many other individuals raising over £400 each.''

Sarah added: “I would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone that helped make the day possible.

''I was overwhelmed by how popular the event was and I’m very proud of everyone  - including myself! - who braved the 100ft challenge.

''We need a new baby unit with more space for families and obviously this is going to go a huge way towards enabling us to get the project underway.”
