Fitness for 'girls only' at Preston Sports Centre

A NEW fitness programme - designed especially for girls by business students at Preston School in Yeovil - gets underway on Tuesday (March 5) at Preston Sports Centre.Fitness for 'girls only' at Preston Sports Centre

Year 11 students from the school were challenged last year by the 1610 leisure trust to market the sports centre to older teenagers, particularly girls which are a hard to reach group in terms of active participation in sports and exercise.

The winning team in this special business competition came up with the idea to encourage girls to get fit for the school summer prom with a special programme of  “girls only” gym sessions and exercise classes at the centre.

The Prom Programme of activities launches from March 5 and female pupils from Preston School will be able to join a weekly  “girls only gym” as well as “exclusive” Bokwa, Zumba and Spinning classes.

Preston Sports Centre manager, Matt Harras, says that by encouraging girls to look good for the prom may lead to a long term interest in fitness.

“It is well known that many teenage girls drop sport in favour of other interests which can have a detrimental effect on their long term health,'' he said.

''So our business competition which we launched last year was focused on teenagers coming up with a solution to the problem.

''We thought the “ Prom Package” of dedicated activities for girls was a brilliant idea and the business students can now see their ideas being put into action.''

Matt added: ''It gives the students some valuable experience of how the leisure industry works and will also encourage reluctant teenage girls to get fit and active on a regular basis.”

The “girls only” supervised gym sessions at Preston Sports Centre Tuesdays and Thursdays 3pm-4pm. Zumba and Bokwa classes Wednesday 3pm-4pm. Spinning Classes Friday 3.30pm-4pm.
