Wine Vaults to be turned into a restaurant and tea room

YEOVIL looks set to lose another pub with plans to convert the Wine Vaults into a restaurant and tea room.Wine Vaults to be turned into a restaurant and tea room

The premises in Union Street, Yeovil, have been used as a pub since 1877 – but its days now look to be numbered and time is to be called for the very last time.

A planning application has been submitted to South Somerset District Council by T & D Investments Ltd to turn the premises from a pub into a restaurant and shop, while four lettering rooms on the first floor will be turned into four flats.

Plan agent, chartered architect John Wratten, said the reason for the change was it had become unsustainable to keeping going as a pub.

‘’In recent years the economic viability of the property as a public house has been called into question and has failed financially,’’ he said. ‘’The proposal is for the ground floor to be taken as a retail unit and restaurant.’’

The application will be discussed at a later date by Yeovil Town Council and South Somerset District Council.

But the demise of the Wine Vaults – once one of the most popular pubs in the town centre but has struggled in recent years – will be another blow to Yeovil’s hostelry history.

The news also comes at a time when the former Picketty Witch in Ilchester Road, Yeovil, looks set to be turned into a Tesco Express store and the Bell Inn along Preston Road is waiting to be rebuilt following a devastating fire last month.
