Police called to take action on Lyde Road speeders

A YEOVIL councillor has expressed despair at figures which show that more than 70 vehicles were found to be travelling at more than 50mph in a 30mph zone in a highly-residential area of the town.Police called to take action on Lyde Road speeders

Between November 12-20, the speed of more than 19,000 vehicles were recorded using a Speed Indicator Device at Lyde Road.

And Cllr Jon Gleeson, who represents the area on Yeovil Town Council, was disappointed to see that only a fifth of drivers were found to have been keeping to the speed limit.

”In the eight days the area was monitored for speed when coming down Lyde Road from the north of Yeovil, an average of seven vehicles a day were travelling at between 50 and 60mph in a 30mph zone," he said.

"This is downright reckless and irresponsible. We must look immediately to tackle the problem and crack down on drivers who choose to speed in a built up area such as this."

Cllr Gleeson added: “To those drivers who were travelling over the speed limit I would urge you to think about cutting down your speed. Getting to your destination a minute or two later to reduce the risk of knocking someone down just makes sense.

"Lyde Road straddles a busy residential community with children walking to school or crossing the Lyde road to play in Birchfield park or other play areas."

The issue will be discussed by Yeovil Town Council's buildings and civic matters committee tonight (Tuesday), while Cllr Gleeson said it will also be discussed at a meeting of Yeovil Without Parish Council.

"I will be calling on the council to come together and ask that Avon and Somerset Police are brought in to target speeding motorists," he said.
