Getting ready for the snow

SOUTH Somerset District Council is pleased to be working in partnership with three town councils and local businesses to provide snow shovels during the coming winter months. Getting ready for the snow

Snow shovels have now been purchased and distributed to Bruton, Castle Cary and Wincanton Town Councils’ for the use of retailers in the market towns.

The council's Area East community planning sub-committee approved the scheme to buy the snow shovels earlier in the year with the condition that the shovels were sourced locally.

Several quotes from local suppliers were obtained and the shovels were purchased from Dave Marsh Hardware Ltd in Castle Cary who said: “I think it is a worthwhile and pro-active scheme and was very happy to be able to supply the shovels for local retailers.”

The shovels will allow the retailers, using a self-help scheme, to make a head start on clearing the pavements outside their premises from ice & snow, making the towns a safer place to shop.

The “Snow Code” states that there is no law stopping you from clearing snow and ice outside your property or public spaces and as long as you are careful and use common sense you would be unlikely to be held responsible for any accidents.

Cllr Mike Lewis, Area East chairman, said: “The District Council is pleased to help local communities in the market towns prepare for a cold snap. However if it is a sunny winter for us, it is still best to be prepared.”

The shovels will be distributed to the retailers by the Town Councils who will then collect and store them in the warmer months.
