Sponsored walk backs breast cancer patients at Yeovil

FUNDS to provide support and pampering days for breast cancer patients diagnosed at Yeovil District Hospital has been boosted by £1,170 - thanks to a team of staff from Dorset County Council.

The challenge involved 15 colleagues, after a day’s work with the Horizon Service, walking from Bowleaze Cove to the Sailing Academy on Portland, which is around ten miles.   Sponsored walk backs breast cancer patients at Yeovil

Yeovil District Hospital’s breast cancer service was chosen as the beneficiary by Kim Martin, who was diagnosed with breast cancer following a mammogram carried out by the NHS Breast Screening Programme, last December.

Kim underwent two operations and six sessions of chemotherapy and has now completed treatment. After breast cancer, patients who have completed their treatments are invited to a ‘Time for You day’ organised by Yeovil District Hospital’s Breast Care Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Held at St Margaret’s Hospice in Yeovil, they are treated to lunch and treatments such as facials, massages, and make-up sessions.

Kim said: “All the breast cancer nurses at YeovilDistrictHospital were fantastic and the day at St Margaret’s Hospice was brilliant providing me with the opportunity to meet others who had been through the same experiences.

''I decided to spend the money we raised on funding this day for others who have had breast cancer as it is paid for by charitable contributions to YeovilDistrictHospital’s breast care trust fund.”

The Horizon team would like to thank Maureen Coombes who donated the printing of the t-shirts worn on the day free of charge as a fellow breast cancer survivor herself.
